Serbia will soon get its first organised disaster risk management, since a law regulating the area will be passed and a body systematically managing the issue established, said Director of the Office for Reconstruction and Flood Relief Marko Blagojević today.

Owing to the European Union aid, 40 micro and small-sized enterprises whose business operations have been suspended due to the floods which hit Serbia in May 2014 will receive assistance to recover and restore their activities.

Valjevo, 19 June 2015 – Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia Ambassador Michael Davenport visited today, together with the mayor of Valjevo Stanko Terzić, some of this city’s most vulnerable families, whose new homes have been built with the European Union funds within the EU Assistance for Flood Relief in Serbia Program. Following the devastating floods in May 2014, European Union provided approximately 1,160,000 euros of aid for the recovery of business activities and agricultural production, reconstruction of flooded households and building of new houses in Valjevo.

A new model of the Law on Disaster Risk Management will be under public discussion in a few days, announced Director of the Office for Reconstruction and Flood Relief Marko Blagojević today, stating that the future umbrella body would be tasked with establishing mechanisms of continuous cooperation with civil society organizations.

The handover ceremony for three newly-built dams was conducted today in Loznica and Mali Zvornik to help the local communities protect themselves against flash floods in the river of Štira in Loznica and in the Borjanska and Velika rivers in the municipality of Mali Zvornik.
